Advanced Child Abuse and Neglect Institute

June 23, 2014 to June 27, 2014
Reno, Nevada
University of Nevada, Reno

All sessions of the Advanced Child Abuse and Neglect Institute (Advanced CANI) build on material covered during the basic or foundational Child Abuse and Neglect Institute developed and provided by NCJFCJ for over 19 years. Advanced CANI has been developed to provide a training experience that examines in depth, the information and practices judges need to know, and how to apply that knowledge, in order to enhance permanency outcomes for children and families involved in the child protection system.

This week-long program will bring together local and national faculty to teach on advanced topics including: judicial leadership, trauma-responsive court practices, families with multi-court involvement, using data to improve court performance and outcomes, domestic violence, substance abuse, adolescent development, and strategies to improve permanency planning and outcomes for children and families, as well as interactive case scenario discussions.

The program will begin on Monday, June 23rd at approximately 8:30 a.m. and will continue through 11:00 a.m., Friday, June 27th. Each day (with the exception of Friday) is a full day, typically 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. with a lunch break. Please note that CANI is most effective when participants attend every day. A Uniform Certificate of Attendance will be provided upon completion of the program. This certificate can be turned into your state certifying body to request continuing legal education credits. If you are seeking CLE credits you must attend every session.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?

This program is designed to be a small, interactive training for judicial officers only. Space is limited to 35 participants while keeping Advanced CANI geographically diverse by enrolling participants representing state and tribal courts from across the U.S. Participation in the original Child Abuse and Neglect Institute is not required; however, substantial experience on the bench will contribute to a richer discussion and learning environment. Please consider all judges in your state, including tribal judges, who may benefit from attending Advanced CANI. The NCJFCJ can assist in identifying tribal judges in your jurisdiction.
