CHILD ABUSE AND NEGLECT INSTITUTE: THE ROLE OF THE JUDGE JUNE 9-12, 2008 RENO, NEVADA 2008 Child Abuse and Neglect Institute (CANI) The four-day judicial training program attracted 58 judicial officers from across the country with a variety of experience on the dependency bench from first appointments to seasoned veterans. Due to the popularity of the Institutes, two concurrent sessions were held once again. The 2008 Child Abuse and Neglect Institute (CANI) held a new session on Educational Issues for Children in Foster Care presented by Judge Sue Cuneo from the Pima County Juvenile Court in Tucson, Arizona. Another new highlight of this year's CANI was the Foster Care: Through the Eyes of Alumni panel. Former foster children, Bill Stanton from the Children's Bureau and Lupe Ortiz-Tovar on the Board of Directors of the Foster Care Alumni of America, shared their stories of growing up in foster care and answered questions on what Judges and other stakeholders can do to effectively advocate for foster children that appear in their courts. The Lead Faculty for Session A was NCJFCJ Vice President Judge Douglas Johnson from the Separate Juvenile Court in Omaha, Nebraska. The Lead Faculty for Session B was Co-Lead Judge for the Tucson NCJFCJ Victims Act Model Court, Judge Stephen Rubin. Other sessions and presenters were: Dr. Donna Rosenberg on Medical Issues in Child Abuse and Neglect Cases; Judge R. Michael Key on Implementing the RESOURCE GUIDELINES; Dr. Kathleen West on Substance Abuse and Permanency Planning; Judge William Thorne on the Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA); and Dr. Elizabeth Jacobs on Child Bonding and Attachment.
