3/17/09 -- On Feb. 17, 2009, President Barack Obama signed into law the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act in an effort to invigorate the nation's economy, create jobs, and address the infrastructure needs of our country and economy.
The Recovery Act provides for significant new money for the field of domestic violence. As part of the Recovery Act , $225 million has been provided to the Office of Justice Programs' Office on Violence Against Women for five of its existing programs, which address domestic violence and sexual assault.
Of particular note is that the STOP Formula Grant Program will receive $140 million from the Recovery Act, and state domestic violence coalitions will receive $8.75 million.
All applications are due by March 24, 2009. Courts are encouraged to contact their jurisdictions' STOP Administrators to ensure that the court set-aside of five percent is accessed. Courts are also eligible to apply for the 15% discretionary funds allowed under the STOP Formula Grant program as well. Additional time is allowed to prepare implementation plans after March 24th.
Those interested in applying for these funds should visit the OVW website for updated information and deadlines regarding this funding.
