3/3/10 -- NCJFCJ will present the "National Conference on Juvenile and Family Law," March 14-17, 2010 at the Planet Hollywood Resort in Las Vegas, Nev. More than 700 juvenile and family justice professionals, including judges, prosecutors, defense counsel, probation officers, detention and corrections workers, police, social workers, and others from Nevada and around the country are expected to participate in this premier national conference. The 2-1/2 day program will focus on the challenging issues facing our nation’s juvenile and family courts, including juvenile delinquency, child abuse and neglect, and domestic violence, among many others. Conference highlights: - Monday morning’s opening session will include welcoming remarks by Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman, Nevada Supreme Court Chief Justice Ron Parraguirre, video greetings from Senators Harry Reid and John Ensign, and a performance by the Las Vegas Academy High School Singers. The Rainbow Company will perform “Unsung Characters from Nevada’s Past” at Monday’s luncheon.
- Plenary sessions will include the keynote by Stuart A. Forsyth, the Legal Futurist, who will provide a look at the future of the juvenile justice system, focusing on how the decisions made today will impact the future; Jerry Tello, who will discuss the importance of viewing reform through a cultural lens that embraces all people; and a panel of juvenile justice system researchers and experts who will discuss the need to bridge research and practice through collaborative relationships.
- As many as 11 seminars will run concurrently, focusing on topics including: immigration; “crossover youth” involved in the delinquency and child welfare systems; disproportionality; high-conflict families; substance abuse; the effects of domestic violence on children; animal cruelty; the adolescent brain; truancy; and many more.
