Evaluation of Faith-Based Programs

Public/Private Ventures’ Partnerships for High-Risk Youth program was established in 1998 with funding from OJJDP to establish a national multisite demonstration and research initiative to involve faith-based institutions as the anchoring organizations within local partnerships. Early assessment of the demonstration sites shows that there is no simple model of how best to build an effective faith-based program to reach at-risk juveniles.

From the Office of Victims of Crime, an OVC Bulletin, New Directions from the Field: Victims Rights and Services for the 21st Century - Faith Community. (Click on Bulletin #12) This bulletin is one chapter from a comprehensive report and recommendations on victims rights and services. It deals with promising practices and recommendations related to the Faith Community. The full report, published in 1998, is available for $6. Ordering instructions appear on the last page of the Bulletin. Seven pages, downloadable as a pdf or an ASCII file.

From Public/Private Ventures: Faith-Based Institutions and High-Risk Youth. Subtitled "A first report to the field," this document reports on a Public/Private Ventures (P/PV) national demonstration project at 15 sites for a two-year period. P/PV looked at congregations and organizations as they engaged in capacity building, strategic planning, and developed financial support. Twenty pages with a reference page listing a number of additional publications on the subject. Downloadable or hard copy can be ordered for $5.00.

From the Urban Institute: Faith-Based Service Providers in the Nation’s Capital: Can They Do More? This report, written by Tobi Jennifer Printz, is one of a series published by the Center on Nonprofits and Philanthropy. This report examines the services provided by the religious community in the greater Washington, D. C., area in the summer and fall of 1997. The report looks at types of service or programs, what populations are served, how they are funded, staffed, etc.  Six pages, downloadable pdf file. At the same location five more reports on faith-based programs. 

From Wisconsin Legislative Council Staff, a staff brief on proposed faith-based legislation, Background Information on Faith-Based Approaches to Crime Prevention and Justice. It reviews faith-based crime prevention programs in Wisconsin and in other states, includes a section on restorative justice and talks about constitutional restrains on providing public funds to religious organizations.
