Last week I gave you a list of publications I had found on the Internet on standards for attorney GALs. At that time I said I thought there were no national standards published. I was wrong. Bob Shepherd and Jim Marsh sent me links to national guidelines from the ABA and NACC (National Association of Counsel for Children). Greg Frye sent me Michigan ’s GAL guidelines. Thank you, gentlemen. Here they are:

NACC Standards of Practice Recommendations: abuse and neglect and a revised set of standards done jointly with the ABA

ABA standards : abuse and neglect and custody and visitation standards

Michigan’s Lawyer-Guardian ad Litem Protocol

Standards of Practice for Guardians ad Litem

I recently had a call in which the caller asked if there were national guidelines for attorney guardians ad litem. To the best of my knowledge, and that of everyone else I talked to about the subject, there are not. There are, however, several states that have adopted standards of practice for GALs. Here’s what I found on the internet:

State of Maine GAL Standards

State of Maine GAL Rules

Best Practices Manual for Guardians Ad Litem – Maine. A project of the Volunteer Lawyers Project developed with a grant from the ABA. The most thorough treatment of the subject online I found.

A Reference Manual for Attorney and Volunteer Guardians ad Litem – Georgia

Standards to Govern the Performance of Guardians ad Litem for Children – Virginia. And the most recent. These were effective September 1, 2003

Recommendations of the Commission on Guardians ad litem  - Kentucky
