The National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges, based on the University of Nevada, Reno campus, pursues a mission to improve courts and systems practice and raise awareness of the core issues that touch the lives of many of our nation’s children and families. A leader in continuing education opportunities, research, and policy development in the field of juvenile and family justice, the NCJFCJ is unique in providing practice-based resources to jurisdictions and communities nationwide.

• THE ISSUES: The issues impacting the nation’s juvenile and family courts run the gamut from child abuse and neglect, family violence, custody and visitation, adoption and foster care to juvenile delinquency and sanctions, substance abuse, minority issues, and victims’ issues.

• WHO WE ARE: The NCJFCJ was founded in 1937 and has been part of the University of Nevada, Reno community since 1969. A non-profit, 501(c)(3) corporation, the NCJFCJ relies on funding from federal and state grants, private foundations, and generous members and donors. Our membership includes nearly 2,000 judges, commissioners, masters, and other juvenile and family law professionals from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and several foreign countries. Staff numbers 84 in Reno and Washington, DC, and 26 at the research center, the National Center for Juvenile Justice, located in Pittsburgh, Pa.

• WHAT WE DO:

     • TRAINING: The NCJFCJ trains or assists in the training of approximately 20,000 judges and juvenile justice, child welfare, and family law professionals each year, in Reno and around the country. In addition, the NCJFCJ and the University of Nevada, Reno work together to provide a Master and a Doctorate in Judicial Studies, the nation’s only advanced degrees in judicial studies, as well as a new Master’s Degree in Justice Management for non-judicial juvenile justice professionals.

     • TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE: Judges, court professionals, and others working in the field receive assistance via phone, mail, e-mail, through numerous publications, or on-site, on myriad issues impacting children and families and the courts that serve them. Technical assistance activities can range from provision of cutting-edge informational materials to on-site assessment of court practice and judicial workload.

     • RESEARCH: The NCJFCJ’s research division, the National Center for Juvenile Justice, located in Pittsburgh, Pa., is the country’s only non-profit research organization focusing solely on the juvenile justice system and the prevention of juvenile delinquency and child abuse and neglect.
