The NCJFCJ will present its 24th Annual Juvenile Probation and Justice Management Conference May 15-18, 2005 at Caesar’s Tahoe at Stateline, Nevada. Approximately 350 juvenile justice professionals are expected at the conference, presented in cooperation with the National Juvenile Court Services Association, which will focus on issues of special interest to juvenile probation officers, court administrators, detention workers, and others in the juvenile justice field. Participants can choose between three tracks: Management Development; Juvenile Probation, including dispositional alternatives and mental health issues; and Case Management of Juvenile Sex Offenders. National experts will present workshops on topics including substance abuse; race and gender issues; mentally ill juveniles; teen courts; strength-based approaches, and the challenges of managing juvenile sex offenders. Other Conference highlights include: Adolfo Segura, news anchor from Azteca TV in Reno, and Sonya Littledeer-Evans, a juvenile probation officer from Oregon, will deliver the keynote address, “The Circle of Giving” at 8:30 a.m. on Monday morning, May 16. Judge Michael Gibbons, a member of the NCJFCJ’s Board of Trustees from Minden, Nevada, will preside at Monday morning’s opening session.
Acting U.S. Assistant Attorney General Tracy Henke of the Office of Justice Programs will speak at the luncheon on Tuesday, May 17.
The University of Nevada, Reno’s new Master’s Degree program in Justice Management will be introduced at this conference. Approved recently by UNR’s Board of Regents, the program enables juvenile justice professionals to receive university credit at training programs through the NCJFCJ, UNR, and the National Judicial College, as well as online.
