Image3/30/06 -- NCJFCJ, its research division, the National Center for Juvenile Justice (NCJJ), based in Pittsburgh, Pa., and the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) are pleased to announce the publication of "Juvenile Offenders and Victims: 2006 National Report." The formal announcement was made on Monday, March 27, 2006 by Regina B. Schofield, Assistant Attorney General for the Office of Justice Programs (OJP) during the 33rd National Conference on Juvenile Justice in Denver, Colo., co-sponsored by the NCJFCJ and the National District Attorneys Association.

Since 1995, the reports in OJJDP’s Juvenile Offenders and Victims series have been among the most referenced documents in the juvenile justice field. They pull together the most requested and needed empirical information and present it in a way that enables non-technical audiences to understand its meaning and significance. Presentations are relatively short, the writing is clear, and graphics and tables are well designed and easy to read.

Co-authors Howard Snyder and Melissa Sickmund from the National Center for Juvenile Justice, have again teamed together to produce a volume that every juvenile justice professional will want in their library. "Juvenile Offenders and Victims: 2006 National Report" continues the tradition of excellence established by the previous reports in the series. Old friends of the series will find familiar content in the report’s updated information, but there is also new information on:

  • state blended sentencing provisions
  • child protective service and juvenile court handling of child maltreatment cases
  • where juvenile violence occurs
  • statutory rape victims and offenders
  • state comparisons of arrest and custody rates
  • sexual violence in juvenile facilities
  • crowding in juvenile facilities and other facility characteristics

All the statistics you need are in one terrific report. In addition to the report, NCJJ and OJJDP disseminate data through a website that gives users further access to the information found in the reports. The website—the OJJDP Statistical Briefing Book—is one of the most visited sites on the U.S. Department of Justice’s family of web sites because of the usefulness of the information and its ease of use.
