NCJFCJ and NJC Conduct Family Law Program

By Tina Bhatia, NCJFCJ Intern, University of Nevada, Las Vegas’ Boyd School of Law

The second year in a row, the National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges collaborated with the National Judicial College to offer sessions from September 24th – 29th at the University of Nevada, Reno campus on “Managing Challenging Family Law Cases.” A class of 29 judges attended the first class training in order to better deal with difficult family issues from the bench.

High conflict cases and family law case management were two of the topics covered by Dr. Philip Stahl and Judge Karen Adam. Professor Sanford Katz presented on pro se litigation and the economic consequences of terminating a marriage.  Judge John Lenderman stimulated thought when he presented taxation in family law cases and how decisions on the bench affect the taxes of both parties in a divorce for years to come.

Magistrate T.J. Cole kept everyone entertained with his style of educational delivery on dealing with the media and how to interview children. Judges found themselves on the hot seat answering questions, but were rewarded with such treasures as a back scratcher, hats and other items that contributed to the energy of the session.

Judge Susan Carbon helped the group better understand the difference between domestic violence and high conflict when deciding divorce cases and custody and visitation cases, while Judge Thomas Hornsby discussed same-sex couples and relationships.

The participants were divided into four roundtable discussion groups to allow in-depth discussion about questions posed by the presenters. The smaller groups generated a greater exchange of ideas and solutions to problems.

NCJFCJ conferences and training sessions also offer judges and practitioners the opportunity to network and compare notes on what is happening in the various parts of the country as compared to their jurisdictions.
