Boat Building Project Helps Troubled Kids Succeed Print E-mail

Participants at NCJFCJ’s 67th Annual Conference held in July 2004 in Portland, Ore., will remember the young people and mentors of the Alexandria Seaport Foundation who spent three days building a wooden boat during the conference and successfully floated it in the hotel pool.

Over the past 13 years, this innovative project has helped hundreds of troubled young people in the Alexandria, Va., area learn a skill, gain confidence, and find their way out of trouble. CBS News recently focused on the work of the Alexandria Seaport Foundation and the vision of its director, Joe Youcha. Former NCJFCJ Board member Judge Stephen Rideout (ret.) of Alexandria was also interviewed for the story. Read more.
