ImageThere are no easy answers in Family Court. The cases, often contentious, involve families in pain or turmoil - couples divorcing, parents fighting over custody and visitation, families dealing with substance abuse and domestic violence, children abused and neglected, and youth involved in delinquency. In Washoe County (Nev.)alone, nearly 14,000 family-related cases were filed in Family Court in fiscal year 2006, presenting Family Court Judges with an unending stream of difficult decisions to make.

Would you like to learn more about the Family Court and share your ideas as to how the Family Court might improve its access to our community?

The public is invited to join in the discussion about Family Court issues and learn about local and national reform efforts during:
“Your Court, Your Community—The Role of the Family Court Judge: A Town Hall Meeting,” presented by NCJFCJ and the Second Judicial District Family Court.

When: Wednesday, June 6, 2007, 5:30 to 7:00 p.m.
Where: Washoe County Courthouse, One South Sierra St., Reno.
Speakers will include: Nevada Supreme Court Chief Justice William Maupin, Washoe County Family Court Judges Frances Doherty and Deborah Schumacher, Judge Michael Gibbons of Minden, Nev., and Judge Louis Trosch, Jr., of Charlotte, N.C.

The June 6th event is one of several planned for NCJFCJ’s 70th anniversary year. On Oct. 12, a public lecture focusing on “Domestic Violence Awareness Month” is scheduled, and a gala 70th Anniversary Dinner featuring a celebrity speaker will be held on November 9.
