NCJFCJ was excited to bring the Child Abuse and Neglect Institute (CANI), for the first time, to Louisville, KY. The Kentucky CANI was developed in partnership with the Kentucky Administrative Office of the Courts, which allowed for the curriculum and lectures to be catered toward the needs of Kentucky judges. Lending their time and dedication again were lead faculty, NCJFCJ Past President Judge Stephen Rubin, recently retired from the Tucson Victims Act Model Court and Immediate Past President, Judge R. Michael Key, along with co-lead faculty, Judge Patricia Walker FitzGerald, Chief Judge of the Jefferson County Family Court in Louisville, Kentucky. Session topics included:RESOURCE GUIDELINES and the ADOPTION AND PERMANENCY GUIDELINES and Making Reasonable Efforts; the Indian Child Welfare Act with Judge William Thorne; Child Bonding and Attachment with Dr. James Clark; Medical Issues in Child Abuse and Neglect with Dr. Michelle Clayton; Substance Abuse and Permanency Planning: How to Implement ASFA When Substance Abuse is a Factor, with Dr. Kathleen West; Bias in Decision-Making, with Dr. Rita Cameron-Wedding; Kentucky Law Update, with Judge Stephen George; an exercise in Multi Court Collaboration, with Judge Janice Rosa; and a dynamic session with former foster youth.
