Things to Consider

  • Criminal justice and social indicator data are regularly analyzed so the team can monitor shifts in the culture of substance use by youth.
  • The team only accepts juveniles who meet the targeting and eligibility criteria.
  • The team utilizes numerous screening and assessment tools so the team can make well-informed decisions about program acceptance.
  • The juvenile drug treatment court conducts random case file audits to determine where gaps exist in policy versus practice.

Things to Consider

  • The screening and assessment of youth occurs before the youth is accepted into the juvenile drug treatment court program and is conducted by a qualified professional.
  • Comprehensive, individualized plans are created for each youth.
  • The youth and their families have the opportunity to be part of the treatment planning. 
  • The treatment providers access a continuum of services for youth and are specially trained in the treatment of adolescents.
  • Treatment providers incorporate and utilize cognitive-behavioral and restructuring therapies. 
  • The juvenile drug treatment court is able to monitor the quality and type of treatment services provided to participants. 
  • Supportive and collateral programs are offered to each participant (e.g., literacy programs, recreational activities, art and music, mentoring, and physical care) and are viewed as a necessary component of thorough treatment planning.

Things to Consider

  • The juvenile drug treatment court team should understand that culture shapes how youth behave and respond to situations. 
  • The juvenile drug treatment court team should not make recommendations for interventions based solely on their own cultural and childhood/adolescent experiences. 
  • The new juvenile drug treatment court team members and staff should have cultural awareness training specific to adolescents.
  • The juvenile drug treatment court should examine retention rates for youth from different cultures.
