The Continuing Judicial Skills in Domestic Violence Cases (CJS) Program is specifically designed for judicial officers who have successfully completed the Enhancing Judicial Skills in Domestic Violence Cases or an equivalent education program. The CJS Program offers an opportunity for an in-depth discussion on specific topics and court assignments.

There is no charge for the educational portion of this workshop. Participants are responsible for making their own travel arrangements, and are responsible for all travel-related costs.

June 8 and 9 Sessions (pick one)

Session One: Recognizing and Responding to Issues Related to Immigration in Intimate Partner Violence in State Court Cases

At the end of this segment, participants will be better able to:

  • Recognize facts that indicate a party qualifies for crime victim related forms of legal immigration status;
  • Be able to sign U and T visa certifications, understanding the role that Congress created for judges;
  • Know how the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) confidentiality laws impact discovery;
  • Promote access to justice for immigrant and Limited English Proficient victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, and human trafficking; and
  • Document facts in state court proceedings and assist in victim’s immigration cases.

Session Two: Family Court Focus: Enhancing Court Responses to Child-Related Matters Involving Domestic Violence

At the end of this segment, participants will be better able to:

  • Evaluate whether domestic violence cases are appropriate for ADR processes in family courts, and, if so, develop safeguards to use in those cases;
  • Promote safety and accountability in all family court-related interventions, such as custody evaluations and assignment of parenting coordinators, GALs, parenting education, supervised visitation, and arbitration;
  • Craft effective parenting orders to match unique family circumstances and needs, and promote the best interest of the child; and
  • Determine the appropriate role of the family court to monitor and review custody/parenting decisions.

Session One: Promoting Compliance & Enhancing Accountability in Cases Involving Domestic Violence

At the end of this segment, participants will be better able to:

  • Identify risk factors associated with domestic violence;
  • Recognize strategies for promoting compliance in domestic violence cases; and
  • Develop a plan for enhancing courtroom culture by integrating principles of procedural justice.

Session Two: Enhancing Court Responses to Cyber Violence

At the end of this segment, participants will be better able to:

  • Describe the importance of technology in society and in our courts;
  • Identify the use and misuse of technology in cyber violence cases;
  • Analyze and rule on cyber violence cases, including evidentiary considerations; and
  • Design a plan for judicial leadership to address cyber violence and the role of technology in your court.
