Washington detains more children for status offenses such as truancy and running away than any other state in the country. However, that could soon change given the newly introduced Senate Bill 5290, which would eliminate the use of juvenile detention for contempt of truancy orders.

Senator Jeannie Darneille introduced the bill and believes that children shouldn’t have to go through traumatic experiences for something that isn’t a crime.
