The Keene Sentinel, Changes That Might Ease Family Court Frustrations

The Keene Sentinel and Granite Street News Collaborative in New Hampshire sought perspective on judicial education best practices from Judge Susan Carbon and Judge Kathleen Quigley to service approximately 30,000 annual family court cases in the state, as among the most challenging and time-consuming work judges face. A special committee on the family division of the circuit court was formed to respond to public feedback on the court system and its processes.

The importance of ongoing training for family court judges “can’t be overstated,” according to Judge Quigley. Family court judges need to be well-versed in topics ranging from child development and the impact of trauma on parents to challenges facing military families, she said. In addition, best practices, and laws, change over time, so ongoing training is critical.
