This article reports juvenile death rate statistics from the 2004 Juvenile Residential Facility Census. Highlights: The overall death rate was 2.8 per 10,000 juveniles held. ‘Suicide was the most commonly reported cause of death in custody… [Accidents and homicide are more common in the general juvenile population;] The death rate for juveniles was generally higher for private facilities than for public facilities… Contrary to conventional wisdom, suicides did not generally occur in the first days of a youth’s stay.’ [p.1]
