While federal and many states’ statutes specifically disqualify those convicted of domestic violence crimes or subject to protection orders from possessing or purchasing firearms, relatively few communities have official firearm surrender protocols and procedures in place. This call will discuss the major components of an effective firearms surrender program, focusing on successful models from communities that have implemented surrender programs in the civil protection order context. It will also provide participants opportunities to share their own successes and challenges with firearms surrender in both civil and criminal domestic violence courts.
