Exploring Civil Protection Orders: A Guide for Improving Practice for Judicial Officers

Courts and the judiciary have a unique and central role in issuing and enforcing domestic violence civil protection orders and have an overriding responsibility to be neutral, treat all persons equally, offer full access to court resources, and ensure that all parties are afforded constitutional due process when adjudicating cases This course will explore and provide useful guidance for judges to incorporate best practices in their adjudication of civil protection order cases, including strategies described in the NCJFCJ’s Civil Protection Orders: A Guide for Improving Practice.

Throughout this 2.5-day program, judicial officers from jurisdictions across the country will explore both general approaches to effective issuance and enforcement of protection orders and specialized topics, including firearms, military protective orders, and respondents use of technology. Participants will gain concrete strategies to protect victims, their families, and their communities while remaining neutral through the adjudicatory process. This course will explore and provide useful guidance for judges to incorporate best practices in their adjudication of civil protection order cases, including strategies described in the NCJFCJ’s Civil Protection Orders: A Guide for Improving Practice.
